July 14, 1934 - October 19, 2020
Wilda Alliene (Lewman) Meldrum, 86, peacefully passed away at home on October 19, 2020. Prior to her sudden death, she was fortunate to remain healthy, independent and active until she passed. Wilda grew up in Grants Pass, Oregon with humble beginnings. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956 where she met her future husband, Clarence, at Ft. Knox, Kentucky and married him in 1957. She served a year in Germany, before settling down in Minneapolis with her husband, raising a family, working full time until she retired full time in Lillian, Alabama. Wilda was a bit of a trail blazer by joining the relatively newly formed Women Army Corps. While she started off as a Private in 1956 sorting mail at Ft. Knox, her officers could see her potential by pushing her for promotions and even skipping rank. At the end of her 25+ year military career, she was honorably retired as a Sargent First Class supporting multiple General Officers at the 88th ARCOM in St. Paul, Mn Wilda loved being active and she was not one to sit around. She loved to go to Major League Baseball Spring training camps, she also loved golfing, skiing, fishing, camping, boating, dancing, traveling and singing with the Bay Chords. Nearly every day, she tended to her gardens and swam which gave her purpose and pleasure. Each Sunday, she paid tribute to the military and her late husband by volunteering at the Pensacola Navy Museum. She was a kind woman, fiercely independent, persistent, dedicated and determined to do things her way. She was a remarkable woman and will be missed by many. She is survived by her brother Stanley Lewman; children, Diana (David) Garin and Douglas (Tracee) Meldrum; grandchildren, Kelly, Kristin, Rachel and Naomi; great grandchildren, Hadley and Matthew. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Meldrum; daughter, Lorraine; parents, Florence (Wynant) Lewman, William S. Lewman; two brothers, Glenn and Alvie; and her sister, Carol. Due to the current COVID-19 health restrictions, military honors and celebration of life will be held at a later date in Pensacola, FL. Wilda will be laid to rest next to her loving husband of 52 years at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL and be protected by the soaring US Navy Blue Angels.
