Neal Howard Toivonen

Neal Howard Toivonen was born in Ishpeming on Sept. 28, 1929, and passed away on Feb. 23, 2022. His parents were Victor and Aili Toivonen. He was raised in Republic and graduated from Republic Schools. He married Goldie Jane Harper on June 28, 1952. They had one son, Neal John. Neal started his own business as an auto repairman. He later became a rural route carrier with the USPS which he retired from. He also was the Chief of the Republic Volunteer Fire Department for several years. He and Goldie loved camping and fishing and were the Host Campers at Squaw Lake for several years. Once Neal retired, he and Goldie became RVers. They traveled through many states and created many special friendships. They finally planted their roots in Summerdale, AL in the Rainbow Plantation where they resided for 28 years. Neal was well known for his intarsia wood art. In May 2019 he received a volunteer of the year award in Baldwin County. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Goldie; son, Neal John; and brothers, Arnold, Richard, and Donald. He is survived by one brother, Marvin of Ishpeming; several nieces and nephews with special nieces, Brenda Maddock, Wendy Gardner, and Becky Havel along with their families, and his special dog, Zoey.
